Why Your AC Is Running But Not Cooling and What You Can Do About It

It’s one of the most frustrating things that can happen in the middle of a hot day: your air conditioner is running, but your home still feels warm and sticky. If your AC is blowing air but not cooling properly, don’t worry—you’re not alone.

This is a common issue, and in many cases, there’s a straightforward fix. We’re here to help you troubleshoot the problem and get your cool air back fast. Let’s walk through some simple steps you can take and explain when it’s time to give us a call.

1. Check Your Thermostat Settings

It might sound basic, but sometimes the issue starts at the thermostat. Make sure your system is set to cool and not just fan. If it’s already on cool, try lowering the temperature a few degrees to see if the system responds.

Weak or dead batteries can cause the thermostat to have issues communicating with your AC. Try replacing them if you haven’t done so in a while.

2. Inspect and Replace the Air Filter

A dirty air filter can seriously affect your system’s performance. When airflow is restricted, your AC may keep running without effectively cooling the air. If it’s been more than a month or two since you changed your filter, now’s the time to check it.

Slide out the old filter and hold it up to the light—if you can’t see through it, it’s time for a replacement. Keeping filters clean helps your system run efficiently and keeps your indoor air healthier too.

3. Check for Blocked or Closed Vents

Take a quick walk around your home to inspect all your vents. Furniture, curtains, or rugs can sometimes block vents without you realizing it. Also, double-check that none of your supply or return vents are closed. For your system to cool effectively, air needs to move freely throughout your home.

4. Look at the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser plays a big role in cooling. If it’s covered in dirt, leaves, or grass clippings, it might not be able to release heat effectively. Carefully remove debris from around the unit and gently rinse it with a garden hose if it’s visibly dirty (avoid using high pressure). Also listen for strange noises or notice if the fan isn’t spinning—both signs it’s time to call us for help.

5. When It’s Time to Call Mr. Air Repair
