4 Common AC Repairs

When it comes to air conditioning repairs, some are more common than others. By knowing how to identify common AC repair needs, you can stay ahead of major AC problems. Some things you may be able to troubleshoot on your own like changing a dirty air filter, but most require professional attention.

Just give us a call if you suspect that you need AC repairs in Garland, TX. We can visit your home and complete an assessment to figure out what is going on. In the meantime, you can keep reading to learn more about four signs that can point to issues with AC operation and what each one means.

1. Strain From a Lack of Airflow

Sometimes this can be a difficult issue to identify. A lack of airflow into the system can cause a variety of different problems for your air conditioner. Because of this, anytime your air conditioner is struggling to operate, checking the air filter is a good place to begin troubleshooting.

If the air filter is dirty enough to block airflow into the system, it can put a lot of strain on the unit, causing it to shut down early during a cooling cycle to prevent overheating. If your air conditioner is cycling in an unusual pattern, change out the air filter and see if you notice a difference in how it operates.

There’s always a chance that there’s also a blockage somewhere else deep in the system preventing airflow, and that’s something that our team can check out and troubleshoot if a dirty air filter isn’t the problem.

2. Refrigerant Leaks

There are several ways to identify a refrigerant leak. The first is if you smell a sweet or chemical-like odor. When refrigerant leaks, the fumes can blow through your system and out of air vents. If you suspect a refrigerant leak, turn the unit off completely to reduce the risks of breathing in the fumes or touching the refrigerant as it leaks out.

You can also pay attention to sounds that are coming from your air conditioner. When refrigerant leaks, it will cause either a bubbling or hissing sound. This is because refrigerant alternates between being in a gas form and a liquid form. In its gas form, the high pressure will produce a hissing sound. In its liquid form, the leaking refrigerant will make a bubbling sound.

3. Loose Wires

Another common repair that we can address is loose wiring. Electricity produces heat when it travels through the wires and to your AC unit. This causes the wires to expand and then they contract back down to a smaller size as they cool down in between use. Looking at the wires, you probably won’t even see these changes happening.

But over time, the wires loosen up from their connections due to these subtle changes. Loose electrical connections can negatively impact AC operation since power is not consistent. Our team can secure wires to make sure your air conditioner is working at its best while also reducing operational hazards.

4. Thermostat Recalibration

Sometimes issues with your air conditioner aren’t with the unit itself at all. Instead, issues can be with the attached thermostat. After all, your thermostat has to measure the indoor air temperature and signal for your air conditioner to turn on and off for cooling cycles.

If the thermostat is not properly calibrated, it may read the indoor air temperature incorrectly or signal at the wrong time for your air conditioner to turn on and off. This can make it seem like something is wrong with your AC unit when really your thermostat is the problem.
